I just want to run off to my neighbourhood Polish supermarket Nic after reading this. You always put so much thought and research into your pieces, and from a fascinating perspective. I particularly value the large bunches of herbs at my local one - where else can you find such bountiful bunches of dill? And the vats of yoghurt...
I love them and I learn so much every time I go. And this kind of newsletter is why I started a Substack in the first place; it is my space, to be as brief or expansive as I like. I think you will love writing yours.
This sounds marvellous! I have not tried Polish food and live about 30 min from Under the Eagle,so will try v soon - our anniversary is coming up 😃. As we not familiar with Polish food, what do suggest we try to start? Pierogi sound very tempting! Then on to Europa...
Make sure you call or message Pod Orlem to check they're open because like a lot of places, their opening hours can change at short notice. I love the wild meat goulash with potato pancakes, the trays of pierogi, the duck breast, the wild pheasant soup and Żurek but it's honestly all good
That sour rye soup sounds so good, I need to try it. Seems likely anyone with a sourdough starter (rye or wheat) should be able to make the zakwas from scratch in less than a day. I'll try it out and share a formula if it works!
Thank you so much for this inspiring piece. I have long lived near a Polish deli and today you tempted me to rush right there and explore. I’ve come away with ptasie mleczko amongst other treats.
I was intrigued by giant jars of fruit honey. I wonder if you know of these?
Fascinating post, thanks Nic!
Thank you!

I'd love this! The soup is really different too. Refreshing.

I don't and now I am going to have to go investigate! I'm glad you paid a visit; these shops are treasure chests, really.
